Appendix - Scoring Scales

The overall scores returned by the API for text submissions are estimates of the score on the CEFR or IELTS scale, depending on the scoring model being used. The default scoring model returns scores which can be mapped to estimates on the CEFR scale.

CEFR

The decimal score can be mapped to the CEFR scale, with each level on the scale being subdivided into two parts with suffixes "i" and "ii". These suffixes are not part of the CEFR scale and would not generally be presented to end users, but they give some indication of whether the estimated score represents a weak or strong performance at that level. For example, a score between 4 and 5 indicates that the text has been judged to be a strong A2 performance.

API score Estimated CEFR level
0 0
1 A1.i
2 A1.ii
3 A2.i
4 A2.ii
5 B1.i
6 B1.ii
7 B2.i
8 B2.ii
9 C1.i
10 C1.ii
11 C2.i
12 C2.ii
13 C2+

IELTS

The decimal score returned by the API when the IELTS scoring model is used can be used directly as an estimate of the IELTS score. IELTS scores are on a scale from 0 to 9 with steps of 0.5, so the raw score returned by the API can be rounded as desired.
